Perhaps the biggest surprise about Titanic’s Best Picture win is that it didn’t sink Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet into long, boring careers playing the same poorly written roles that made $1.8 billion. Now, if only a few others had made such wise career choices that year.
The year that launched Mel Gibson as a director to be reckoned with did have one small bright side. With movies like Toy Story and A Little Princess, it was a the year Hollywood stopped making kids movies that talked down to kids. If only it had also been the year Gibson stopped making movies.
