Unfortunately, because the RMI experiment has ended, I was wondering if you are going to post any new content on this website?

Thanks for the info, Andy. We'll look into it see what stories we can find. As a student and child of the West, I love stories about how the region is tied into newspapers, especially the Rocky.

Hi,

I am a marathon researcher - investigating the history of the event. I have discovered what looks to be one of the earliest marathons held in the West of America - the Rocky Mountain News Marathon - sponsored by the Rocky Mountain News.

I heard the sad news and I hope the online version is successful.

The Rocky Mountain News Marathon was held at least four times - 1924-1927 and won each time by Seth Gonzales. Gonzales was an interesting character - he turned professional in 1928 and ran across America in the Pyle Bunion Derby - a stage race. He was one of the finishers.

If you put his name and the Rocky Mountain News Marathon into a search engine, the Pyle race will be flagged up on a very useful website that actually has a photo of Gonzales.

Gonzales who apprently came from Raton, NM also ran in the 1929 race from New York to LA but does not look to have been one of the finishers.

If there is any information on the Rocky Mountain News Marathon of the 1920s I would be interested - but I also thought it was a story which might interest you. The impact the RMN had in pioneering the marathon in the West.

Good luck,

Best,

Andy Milroy

Hello Steve, I hope this personal request will not be inappropriate. I've tried a few other avenues without success. If you, or your friends can help forward this message to Ed Dentry, I'd sure appreciate it.

Hello Ed, If you are who I think you are, I lived across the street from you in Cockeysville years ago. My (then) wife Susie and I lived on St David Ct and you wrote an article for the News American about my trips to the Outer Banks to fish for King Mackerel. You were also kind enough to take me fishing on a very frozen Susquehanna River.

Thanks for those memories. I hope the passing years have been good to you. Among the many events which have transpired since those days, I produced a film about surf fishing. It's something I'm pretty proud of and would be absolutely delighted to send it to you. Please send some info and I'll get it out to you. I remarried years ago and my son just graduated high school. 35 years in film production, and, of course, life's ups and downs, have taken their toll.

But then, what life was ever worth living that left no scars? On the whole, life continues to be good and most of the people I've known remarkable - even if in unremarked ways. I have a website - fishthesurf.net. I don't know if you'll recognize me - it's been a while.

I remember you fondly and I wish you and your family all the best.
I'm still in Baltimore and can be reached at shapiras@comcast.net

Be well, Lee Samson Shapira

Sorry, but I got to flap my big mouth. I do appreciate the concerns about Hall of Fame records and how folks have cheated us out of true hero's but to me, there is another aspect of steroid use that should be addressed. The folks, the kids that are using 'roids' are killing themselves, literally! Every Bronco fan remembers frequent pro-bowl defensive lineman Lyle Alzado, who made a public plea on his eminent demise to teenagers not to follow his footsteps. Sure, those that use steroids maybe stealing records, but they are also stealing something so much more valuable. And, they might be stealing our kids life's by setting an example, a deadly example.

I now relent the soapbox and I apologise.
