Rockies add a bit of old spice to their lineup

Not so long ago, we here at America's Fish were bemoaning how slow the Colorado Rockies were moving in their offseason plans. Coming off a disappointing season, there seemed no sense of urgency about making the team interesting or competitive. With the acquisition of infielder Marco Scutaro from the Boston Red Sox on Saturday, we would like to take it all back.

A few hours after midnight on January 1 this year — I was far too tired for anything so dramatic as the stroke of midnight between 2011 and 2012 — InsideTheRockies.com, one of the first projects for America's Fish, was locked down. For the first baseball season since 1996, I will be merely a fan in 2012.

As it stands the Rockies will go into the 2012 season with a bullpen roughly the same as what they had last year, a rotation that while lacking a big arm has more depth and a slightly, but significantly improved starting lineup.

The Colorado Rockies have yet to make the big splash they need — actually two big splashes, a veteran innings-eating starting pitcher and an impact hitter — but they have been active in dumping some of their overpriced crap in the past few days.

If the Pittsburgh Pirates are willing to give Clint Barmes $5 million a year to hit .240, surely the Colorado Rockies could have asked the Phillies to pay all of Ty Wigginton's $4 million salary to do the same, rather than picking up $2 million of his salary.
