Without Jimenez, rotation, sanity get tested
When I asked on InsideTheRockies.com early in spring training whether the Colorado Rockies rotation could be trusted, another Rockies site snarkily suggested they didn't understand the question, lauding the depth of the pitching staff and the overall improvement of the rotation. My point was that in 2010, the Rockies rotation looked good coming out of spring training and their depth also looked solid with prospects Jhoulys Chacin and Esmil Rogers as well as left-hander Greg Smith waiting at Triple-A. But injuries to Jeff Francis, Jorge De La Rosa and Jason Hammel stretched the rotation, which beyond Ubaldo Jimenez, proved incapable of consistently taking the Rockies deep into games. My concern this spring was that the Rockies again would be unable to withstand multiple injuries to their starting rotation. This is why I asked the question: with Aaron Cook out until June, Jimenez now joins him on the disabled list. On top of this De La Rosa left his first start with a blood blister that is now apparently gone, but has been a recurring problem for him. Esmil Rogers and Greg Reynolds are now in the Rockies' rotation. So we'll see what the answer to my question really is, but clearly it was a valid question.
