The end of another Rocky era
When a group of Rocky Mountain News staffers launched IWantMyRocky.com in late 2008 to try to save the newspaper, we did so fully understanding that it was likely a lost cause. There were many good reasons (and some bad ones) to do what we did, and foremost for nearly everyone was to simply not go quietly. But when we launched it, we also considered it a likely launching pad for new projects should the newspaper close.
Kevin Flynn, the Rocky's transportation reporter, moved immediately to the website the Monday after we closed and just kept doing what he had been doing. He was involved in our attempt to create an actual news site at INDenverTimes.com, and when that effort failed he moved on to his own thing. He contributed for our next attempt at a news site, RockyMountainIndependent.com, but his focus was then on trying to make his own website, Inside-Lane.com, work.
For a little more than a year, Kevin continued to write abotu transportation issues in Denver. He was, in fact, the only dedicated journalist to the subject. But now he has moved on to a job as the public information project manager for RTD FasTracks’ innovative Eagle P3 project.
Kevin was the last to move on to new things among the IWantMyRocky.com group who once signed a letter to E.W. Scripps asking them to reconsider, to fight rather to fold. Only one among us is still in newspapers, working as a reporter for the Colorado Springs Gazette. Two have moved on to teaching. I'm moving toward graphic design and marketing. And now Kevin is moving to other side of the subject he's been covering for years.
Although the Rocky closed more than a year ago now, this final act closes the door on I Want My Rocky.
